Artist: Phil Irons

This urn honours a magnificent walnut from Hampton Lucy, Warwickshire, estimated to be 300 years old. A fallen branch sparked the creation – the homeowner, wanting the wood cherished, contacted Phil’s friend, the tree surgeon.

Nearly a ton of walnut later (including a delightful set of salad bowls for the kind homeowner!), Phil embarked on this project. The wood itself is the star, showcased in its natural beauty.

The lid, crafted from holly felled in Evesham, Worcestershire, presented a unique challenge – natural cracks. Inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending with gold, Phil filled them with stunning turquoise holographic flakes, transforming them into a captivating feature. Finished with a protective coat, this urn whispers stories of a grand tree and the kindness of strangers.

Phil Irons

Phil Irons, an Australian-born woodturner, discovered his passion at thirteen on his father's antique lathe. After spending time in the travel industry, he returned to woodturning full-time in 1994. His expertise in English timber comes from years as a tree surgeon. Phil's best-selling book "Woodturning: Two in One" showcases his signature style: vessels and hollow forms with clean lines, often accentuated by natural wood features and subtle dyes. Adding threaded lids transforms these into beautiful, functional urns, a specialty sought after worldwide.

Phil finds deep meaning in creating "functional art" for such a personal purpose. He is a past president of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and a member of the American Association of Woodturners.
