Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Simple guidance on urn sizes, materials, delivery, and care. We curate contemporary cremation urns for ashes that are handmade by skilled artisans and designed to live naturally in the home.
Cremation urn sizes and volume
What size cremation urn do I need for ashes?
A full size adult urn is often around 3.5 litres. A standard approach to calculating the size or internal volume is that 1kg of body weight requires around 0.036 litres of urn capacity.
Example:
50 kg is around 1.8 litres
70 kg is around 2.5 litres
90 kg is around 3.3 litres
This is guidance rather than a rule, so we recommend choosing using the internal volume in litres on the product page, and sizing up slightly if you are unsure. If you share the ashes among family, choose to scatter some, or simply want to keep a smaller portion of the ashes, you can choose an urn with a smaller internal volume. Every product page includes internal volume, and we indicate whether the piece is intended as a full size urn, a medium option, or a keepsake urn.

What is a keepsake urn for ashes?
A keepsake urn is designed to hold a smaller portion of ashes. It is often chosen for sharing ashes among family, or keeping a small amount at home.
Litres and cubic inches, how do I compare urn sizes?
In the UK you will usually see litres. In the US you will often see cubic inches. As a simple guide, 1 litre is approximately 61 cubic inches. We list internal volume (in litres or millilitres) on all product pages.
Will the ashes bag fit inside the urn?
Many of our urns can accommodate an ash bag, which depends on the opening and the internal volume of the specific piece. If you would like advice on any specific piece, please contact us with the link to the urn you are considering and we will confirm what to expect.
Do you offer larger or companion urns?
We do offer some larger or companion urns. If you are looking for a larger capacity, please contact us and we will point you to suitable options.
Choosing a cremation urn
What types of cremation urns do you offer?
We curate handmade contemporary cremation urns for ashes in ceramic, wood and metal. Our collection includes full size urns and keepsake urns.
Are your cremation urns handmade?
Yes. Each urn is handcrafted by a skilled artisan, which is featured on the product pages. Most of our cremation urns are unique, one-off pieces. In case there are multiple pieces of the same design in stock, small variations in texture, glaze, or grain may apply.
Which material should I choose, ceramic vs wood vs metal?
Which material to choose is a very personal decision. Ceramic often feels sculptural and tactile. Wood feels warm and timeless. Metal can feel clean, minimal, and durable. We encourage you to choose a piece that feels most fitting to the person you are remembering, as well as an urn that sits naturally in your home.
How do I choose the right cremation urn?
Choosing a cremation urn is a deeply personal and meaningful decision, and presents an opportunity to honour and celebrate the life of a loved one in a way that reflects their unique character and legacy. You can find our guide on how to choose the right cremation urn here: Choosing an urn.
Can an urn be displayed at home?

Materials, care and keeping an urn at home
How do I transfer ashes into the urn?
Many families ask the funeral director or crematorium to help, which is completely normal. If you feel comfortable doing it yourself, choose a calm moment and give yourself time. Work on a clear, stable surface and move slowly, as ashes are much finer than most people expect.
Is the urn securely closed?
Closure varies by piece. Our product pages include details where relevant, and if you would like reassurance about a particular urn, please contact us and we will confirm. If you require a more permanent seal, a small amount of suitable adhesive can be used to secure the lid. Your funeral director or crematorium can also advise on the best approach for your situation.
How do I care for ceramic, wood or metal urns?
Gentle care is best. Dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Try to keep the urn away from prolonged moisture.
Where should I place an urn at home?
Choose a stable surface away from edges, heat sources, and strong direct sunlight.
Can an urn be kept outdoors?
In most cases we recommend indoor placement. If you have a specific outdoor use in mind, please contact us and we will advise based on the material and finish.
