Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Simple guidance on urn sizes, materials, delivery, and care. We curate contemporary cremation urns for ashes that are handmade by skilled artisans and designed to live naturally in the home.
Cremation urn sizes and volume
A full size adult urn is often around 3.5 litres, or approximately 200–215 cubic inches. As a general guide, 1 kg of body weight requires around 0.036 litres of urn capacity, while in the US a common rule of thumb is 1 pound of body weight to 1 cubic inch of space.
Example:
50 kg / 110 lbs is around 1.8 litres / 110 cubic inches
70 kg / 154 lbs is around 2.5 litres / 154 cubic inches
90 kg / 198 lbs is around 3.2 litres / 198 cubic inches
This is intended as guidance rather than a strict rule, so we recommend choosing based on the internal volume shown on the product page and sizing up slightly if you are unsure. If you plan to share the ashes among family, scatter some, or keep only a smaller portion, you may choose an urn with a smaller internal volume. Every product page includes internal volume, and we indicate whether the piece is intended as a full size urn, a medium option, or a keepsake urn.
A keepsake urn is designed to hold a smaller portion of ashes. It is often chosen for sharing ashes among family, or keeping a small amount at home.
In the UK, capacity is typically shown in litres, while in the US it is more commonly listed in cubic inches. As a simple guide, 1 litre is approximately 61 cubic inches. We include internal volume on all product pages, using litres or millilitres for our main UK collection and cubic inches for our US collection.
Many of our urns can accommodate an ash bag, which depends on the opening and the internal volume of the specific piece. If you would like advice on any specific piece, please contact us with the link to the urn you are considering and we will confirm what to expect.
We do offer some larger or companion urns. If you are looking for a larger capacity, please contact us and we will point you to suitable options.
Choosing a cremation urn
We curate handmade contemporary cremation urns for ashes in ceramic, wood and metal. Our collection includes full size urns and keepsake urns.
Yes. Each urn is handcrafted by a skilled artisan, which is featured on the product pages. Most of our cremation urns are unique, one-off pieces. In case there are multiple pieces of the same design in stock, small variations in texture, glaze, or grain may apply.
Which material to choose is a very personal decision. Ceramic often feels sculptural and tactile. Wood feels warm and timeless. Metal can feel clean, minimal, and durable. We encourage you to choose a piece that feels most fitting to the person you are remembering, as well as an urn that sits naturally in your home.
Choosing a cremation urn is a deeply personal and meaningful decision, and presents an opportunity to honour and celebrate the life of a loved one in a way that reflects their unique character and legacy. There are several factors to take into consideration when selecting an urn, from aesthetic appeal to the practicalities of size and material. Materials, care and keeping an urn at home
Many families ask the funeral director or crematorium to help, which is completely normal. If you feel comfortable doing it yourself, choose a calm moment and give yourself time. Work on a clear, stable surface and move slowly, as ashes are much finer than most people expect.
Closure varies by piece. Our product pages include details where relevant, and if you would like reassurance about a particular urn, please contact us and we will confirm. If you require a more permanent seal, a small amount of suitable adhesive can be used to secure the lid. Your funeral director or crematorium can also advise on the best approach for your situation.
Gentle care is best. Dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Try to keep the urn away from prolonged moisture.
Choose a stable surface away from edges, heat sources, and strong direct sunlight.
In most cases we recommend indoor placement. If you have a specific outdoor use in mind, please contact us and we will advise based on the material and finish.
