Agateware Cremation Urn • Large

£995

1 in stock

Artist: Alma Boyes

This large handmade Agateware cremation urn combines ceramic and wood, pairing a porcelain Agateware vessel by Alma Boyes with a Yew wood lid turned by Patrick Letschka. The Agateware technique involves layering and blending coloured clays to form flowing marbled patterns that run through the porcelain, revealing a one-of-a-kind surface on every urn.

Fired to stoneware, the vessel’s interior is glazed for protection, while the exterior is polished to a satin finish. The Yew lid is waxed inside and left natural outside, showcasing the warmth of the grain. Each urn is a unique, handcrafted memorial, celebrating both the materials and the lives they commemorate.

Alma Boyes

Alma Boyes is a British ceramicist with over 40 years of experience. For this exclusive collection with Urn Studios, she has applied her deep material knowledge and refined aesthetic to the creation of handmade ceramic urns for ashes, blending function, form, and historical process in pieces designed to honour memory.

Her practice often explores Agateware, a technique rooted in 17th–18th century British ceramics and popularised by Josiah Wedgwood. Alma studied ceramics and sculpture at Bath Academy of Art and completed an MA in Ceramic Design in Stoke-on-Trent. She has lectured in ceramics and design since the early 1980s, most notably as Academic Program Leader for BA (Hons) 3D Design and Craft at the University of Brighton until 2020. She now works from her studio in East Sussex, continuing to explore material history through contemporary form.
