The vessel’s form echoes Greek and Roman amphorae, while the guardian hound atop draws from Pre-Columbian and Mesoamerican art, reminiscent of sacred animal figures.

(Count Barkula)

Count Barkula is the playful ceramic alter ego of Kate Gorbunova, born during lockdown as an escape from screen fatigue. A graphic designer by trade, Kate sought a hands-on creative outlet—something tangible and deeply personal. She found it in clay. Inspired by her beloved whippet, Victor Hugo, Kate infuses each piece with character and mischief. Her ceramics blend ancient influences with a modern twist.

The shapes echo Greek and Roman pottery, while expressive animal figures nod to Pre-Columbian and Mesoamerican art. Richly decorated surfaces florals reminiscent of folk traditions and patterns inspired by Persian and Middle Eastern ceramics—bring each piece to life. Every work is hand-built and painted with love in Hackney, East London.
