Caro Gates
Caro Gates lives and works in South East London where she was born in 1984. She first started working with ceramics whilst studying graphic design at Camberwell College of Arts and has returned to the medium after several years of working in illustration and design.
An exploration between the organic and the manmade is a recurring theme throughout Caro’s work. Inspired by the natural world and the way it feeds into cultures, the focus of much of her research is on the ways in which humanity has celebrated nature – across history, cultures and through storytelling. Working on the wheel, she uses slip casting to create most pieces which are then hand carved or finished to have an imperfect feel, so that each piece is unique.
