Artist: Jo Taylor

Urn i is a ceramic urn by British ceramic artist Jo Taylor, wheel-thrown in White St Thomas clay for its soft, natural colour and sandy texture. Its sculptural surface is richly decorated with shells, leaves and botanical forms, each individually applied by hand.

The shell motifs begin with fragments gathered by Jo from different beaches, which are pressed into sprig moulds before being incorporated into the clay alongside hand-modelled leaves and other decorative elements. Hours of detailed making and finishing give each vessel its own arrangement of texture, form and ornament. The piece brings together clay, craft and memory, drawing on forms found in the natural world and translating them through the artist’s hand.

Jo Taylor

Jo Taylor graduated with an MA in Ceramics from Bath Spa University in 2012 and now creates her distinctive work from a home studio in Wiltshire. Inspired by architectural ornament, particularly from the Rococo period, her sculptural pieces reference history while embracing contemporary forms. Central to her practice is the freedom to create unique, expressive works that combine hand-building, extrusion, sprigging, and wheel-throwing.

This special collection of handmade ceramic urns, created for urn studios, reflects Jo’s signature approach. Each urn is high-fired in White St Thomas clay to evoke the warm hue of Bath stone. Unglazed and fired only once, the vessels reveal the raw texture of the clay and the maker’s touch, quietly expressive memorial pieces rooted in form and tradition.
