Artist: Phil Irons

Created by Phil Irons, this handcrafted wooden companion urn began life in a Stratford-upon-Avon garden, where a maple tree was carefully removed by one of Phil’s trusted collaborators. The wood’s pale tone takes stain beautifully, leading Phil to give this piece its rich, vibrant blue hue. A carved helix detail spirals across the urn, revealing the maple’s natural tone beneath. The burr’s distinctive “eyes” are filled with holographic epoxy, catching light with subtle iridescence.

Finished with eco-friendly gloss and satin lacquers, this cremation urn is as sustainable as it is striking. The lid, made from rare white burr ash, features a precise hand-cut thread for secure closure, a reflection of meticulous craftsmanship and care.

Phil Irons

Phil Irons, an Australian-born woodturner, discovered his passion at thirteen using his father’s antique lathe. After a career in the travel industry, he returned to woodworking full-time in 1994. His deep understanding of English timberstems from years working as a tree surgeon. Phil’s bestselling book Woodturning: Two in One showcases his signature style: elegant vessels and hollow forms, often enhanced with subtle dyes and natural grain features. By adding precision-threaded lids, these pieces become handmade wooden cremation urns sought after worldwide.

Creating artisan memorial urns for ashes gives Phil a profound sense of purpose, blending functional art with deep emotional meaning. He is a past president of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and a member of the American Association of Woodturners.
