Artist: Phil Irons

This urn honours a fallen giant – a 300-year-old elm from Colesden, Bedfordshire. Sadly, Dutch Elm Disease took its toll, and the borough council deemed it a hazard in 2017. Thankfully, Phil was offered the branch wood, including some impressive 24-inch pieces.

Burr elm, with its unique character and ever-changing patterns, is a favourite of Phil. This urn, crafted from a cross-grained, bark-edged section, showcases the wood’s natural beauty.

Rough-turned and dried for months, the piece was then meticulously re-turned, revealing drying cracks and burr “eyes.” These imperfections become a captivating feature, filled with sparkling rose holographic epoxy.

Sanded to a flawless finish, the urn is protected with eco-friendly hardwax oil. The boxwood finial lid, featuring a secure 12-thread-per-inch closure, completes this tribute.

Phil Irons

Phil Irons, an Australian-born woodturner, discovered his passion at thirteen on his father's antique lathe. After spending time in the travel industry, he returned to woodturning full-time in 1994. His expertise in English timber comes from years as a tree surgeon. Phil's best-selling book "Woodturning: Two in One" showcases his signature style: vessels and hollow forms with clean lines, often accentuated by natural wood features and subtle dyes. Adding threaded lids transforms these into beautiful, functional urns, a specialty sought after worldwide.

Phil finds deep meaning in creating "functional art" for such a personal purpose. He is a past president of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and a member of the American Association of Woodturners.
