This hand-built ceramic box is made from slabs of blended porcelain and terracotta. Due to the hand-building process, the lid fits in only one way. A small dent on the lid aligns with the maker’s signature at the base, subtly indicating the correct orientation. The glass lid is cast from off-cut waste glass collected from other artists.

Through hand sanding and polishing high fired ceramics, the material is transformed into surfaces that resemble stones worn smooth over time, evoking how memories are shaped, softened, and altered through the years.

Erica Tung

Erica Tung is a designer, maker, and material researcher based in London. Her work is driven by a curiosity about the properties and relationships of ceramic and glass. She is fascinated by the similarity between the two materials, their intersection of techniques, and how they complement each other when placed together.

Her work explores the emotional resonance of objects, with each box serving as a metaphor for both protection and the sentimental value attached to cherished memories. Through the work, she delves into themes of coexistence, connection, and nostalgia. The interplay between ceramics and glass reflects human relationships; their endurance, fragility, and evolution. Through this fusion of materials, she aims to provoke reflection on the complexity of personal connections, and how memory both preserves and reshapes these bonds.
