Burr Maple Companion Urn

Artist: Phil Irons

This urn started life in a Stratford-upon-Avon garden, lovingly removed by Phil’s favorite tree surgeon who knows his taste. Maple’s creamy colour takes stain beautifully, so Phil opted for a vibrant hue in this piece.

A carved helix graces the urn, adding both visual interest and a glimpse of the wood’s natural tone. The burr’s “eyes” are filled with captivating holographic epoxy, creating a touch of wonder. Finished with eco-friendly gloss and satin lacquers, this urn is as kind to the environment as it is stunning.

The lid, crafted from rare white burr ash, features a secure 12-thread-per-inch hand-cut thread.

Phil Irons

Phil Irons, an Australian-born woodturner, discovered his passion at thirteen on his father's antique lathe. After spending time in the travel industry, he returned to woodturning full-time in 1994. His expertise in English timber comes from years as a tree surgeon. Phil's best-selling book "Woodturning: Two in One" showcases his signature style: vessels and hollow forms with clean lines, often accentuated by natural wood features and subtle dyes. Adding threaded lids transforms these into beautiful, functional urns, a specialty sought after worldwide.

Phil finds deep meaning in creating "functional art" for such a personal purpose. He is a past president of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and a member of the American Association of Woodturners.
